2010 Harley Road Test

With recognition to "Motorcycle USA", who I thank for the following Road Test.

"When you hear the name Harley-Davidson what do you think of? More than anything the answer matches the age of the person you ask. If you’re an older rider than there is a fair chance that you’ll feel this motorcycle marque is the de facto motorcycling standard. But for younger folks, the H-D brand usually conjures up images of under-performing motorcycles built more for posing in the parking lot than ripping around on the streets. After spending two days at the controls of Harley-Davidson’s 2010 model offerings, though, I have to admit there is something more to the brand than I pessimistically presumed. One of the coolest things about this coming year’s line-up is the broad range of motorcycling options afforded by the folks in Milwaukee.

Poker Run

The middle of September saw our HOG Durban Chapter have a sponsored "Poker Run" that had a good turnout and many compliments.

The prime reasons for its success were the sponsors, Primi Piatti franchise management (wonderfully represented by Gavin & his wife Melody). They personally put in a lot of time and effort to making it a fun event for all involved.

A record of my view of the event will give some idea of the effort put in. It started with my fiance', Lila, & I arriving at the adopted starting point for our breakfast runs at Primi Piatti Gateway, Umhlanga early (about 7.30 or so) on Sunday morning. The Primi staff, management & national franchise manager were all there already, ready with free t-shirts, coffee & energy juices for all the entrants. There were also some riders from our chapter, HOG 1000 Hills & Steel Wings (all Harley riders were welcome) there to take part. As the treasurer, all I had to do was collect the entry fees & hand out t-shirts, but it was gratifying to see the contact I had made with Gavin & Primi paying off with about 48 bikes & more than 75 entrants (lots of pillions) participating. With cards now drawn by all entrants, Gavin & his wife were off to Primi Hillcrest
to prepare for the arrival of our large pack of Harleys. Our road captain, Ronnie, gave all the briefing before the ride up to Hillcrest, and then led us in our normal staggered formation pack (excluding the Steel Wings members who rode in their own group) safely up to Hillcrest Primi.

Riding in a pack of more than 40 bikes is something to be experienced. First of all, riding a Harley is a very physical experience - the wind in the face, the vibration of the motor, the sensation of freedom - it's what riding is about; and then you have forty more riders with you, all sharing the same thing. The experience of the car passengers gawking at the pack of shiny examples of Milwaukee chrome, riding in a thunderous roar along the roads is also memorable. It's very provoking, hard to ignore, and gets many reactions; staring, envy, admiring, intimidated, irritated, inquisitive and many more. Mostly positive, in that it makes many more smiles than frowns. It's an unexpected event on a boring road that made the day more interesting.

Arriving at Primi Piatti Hillcrest was an event too. The staff from the surrounding restaurants clammered for a ride on a Harley (something everyone should do at least once). Some got one. Gavin had prepared all at the venue, and our second cards were were drawn and noted (to eventually make up a poker hand; with prizes for the best hands held); as well as coffee, sherry (for the cold) & muffins to build up energy.

2010 Harley Models Officially Released

The 2010 Harley Range has been revealed!! The details of new colours announced on this blogspot have been shown to be correct.

Shown on the left is the 2010 Dyna Superglide Custom (in Scarlet Red). This is the only Dyna available in the new "BlackIce Pearl" colour - and surprise, surprise - it's a DARK BLUE!! .........not Black. (See below). Can't wait to see it up close. Nothing else on this seems to be changed from 2009 (It aint broke)!
Why am I highlighting this model? I placed my order for a "Black Ice Pearl" Dyna Superglide Custom with the 1000 Hills Harley-Davidson dealer principal in June 2009. His queries with the Cape Town H-D office was just met with a quizical smile & "I don't know how the people find these things. More on this later.

2010 VRod Tourer

Now this rumour has such detail, the author deserves some recognition.

There’s a rumor going around that Harley-Davidson is working on a water-cooled, four cylinder, v-twin motor with a displacement somewhere between 1,300cc and 1,600cc. The good, the bad, and the ugly after the jump.

Supposedly, the heads of the motor are set at 72º, which is halfway between the bulkier but smoother running 90º setup, and the more traditional 45º setup used on the current Harley Twin Cam and Evo engines. What is especially interesting about this rumor is that each crankshaft throw is to be split 18oº either side of the throw centerline, so that the resulting piston configuration emulates a 90º engine. This arrangement could be in an effort to retain the “Harley” sound of the bike, which the company once tried to trademark.

It seems hard to imagine how this rumor could be true if the final application of the motor is to be on a Harley-Davidson cruiser. A complete departure from an air-cooled, v-twin motor is sure to sour the taste with many die hard Harley riders. However, we can perhaps see this application in a “sportier” cruiser model, similar to the V-Rod, that is aimed to extend Harley’s product line beyond its current loyal fan base. This notion is something the company should seriously consider doing, but so far has had a less than stellar time achieving with the VRSC model line. The brand extension is more palatable, but would still be a big step for the Milwaukee based manufacturer, who had an up-hill battle when simply proposing the Porsche design V-Rod motor.

What we’re more inclined to believe is that the motor could be destined for a different mark under Harley’s control, either Buell or a new brand of motorcycle not yet disclosed. Time will tell both if this rumor should pane out to be truth, and what the final details are.

2010 CVO Ultra Glide

MILWAUKEE (April 1, 2009) - In a rare and not anticipated move, Harley-Davidson launches the 2010 Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) Ultra Classic Electra Glide earlier than in previous years. The 2010 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide is Harley's answer to a distressed economy: Screw it. Let's ride!

Based on the already improved 2009 models, the new CVO Ultra has been enhanced all around to teach the competition a lesson. A new 200 mm rear tire, a new 2-into-2 true dual exhaust system and other enhancements like the liquid cooled Porsche-developed cylinder heads set a foundation for the next generation of Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycles. The CVO Ultra is powered by the new and CVO-exclusive Screamin’ Eagle Biofuel compatible LC Twin Cam 132-cid engine, the largest displacement production engine offered by Harley-Davidson, producing 150 ft. lbs. of torque at 3250 rpm, as well as the smooth shifting 6+1-speed Cruise Drive transmission with reverse.

As part of a most discerning and well-traveled group of motorcyclists, CVO Ultra riders will enjoy extra amenities for 2010 such as a Nespresso-licensed in-Tour-Pak coffeemaker, which churns out George Clooney approved Espresso's and other coffee drinks. The Nespresso machine has its own one-gallon mineral water tank.

The 2010 CVO Ultra rides on new custom chrome wheels with the owners name engraved by a dealer-installed water jet cutting machine with a 200 mm, 17-inch rear tire and 140 mm, 19-inch front tire. For that extra comfort, there is the new, six-way electric controlled and dual-heated seat inclusive of an adjustable massage mode and with separate outputs for heated gear for rider and passenger. In addition the CVO Ultra has heated grips as well as rider and passenger heated floorboards. A true Eskimo package.

The Harley-Davidson CVO program creates limited-production, exclusive motorcycles produced by teams of technicians in a special assembly area at the Harley-Davidson plants in York, Pa., and Kansas City. Approximately 2,200 examples of the 2010 CVO Ultra will be assembled at the York Vehicle Operations facility and all of the will be vivid black. The suggested U.S. retail price for the 2010 CVO Ultra is $33,333 with approved financing available from 3.33%.

Based on the Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, the CVO Ultra offers premium amenities from that model such as a 200-watt CD/AM/FM/WB/MP3/TV/DVD Advanced Audio Video System by Harman-Kardon, CB and intercom, and passenger audio with complete rider and passenger Bluetooth headsets including navigation and mobile phone functionality, cruise control, plus standard XM Radio and integrated touch navigation system from Garmin. The system is delivered with an iPod dock by Denon and provides full iPod functionality through its large 8 inch full color high resolution touch screen which controls all AAS functionality. A total of ten high quality speakers provide ample sound for the road: Screw it. Let's ride!

The CVO Ultra rides on the all new Touring-exclusive Legend air ride rear suspension system developed in partnership with Independent Cycle, Inc. Improving on the ride quality previously available from Harley, the new System allows to lower the bike to the ground and any level between ground and riding, as well as higher heavy terrain riding level, by the flick of a switch. Savings come from the eliminated side stand.

The CVO Ultra will be offered in any color the customer desires, as long as it is Vivid Black. The vented lower fairings and inner fairing and switch panel are color-matched to the selected paint scheme. A fitted indoor storage cover with CVO logo and a unique Harley-Davidson CVO key in a presentation box are also included.

Harley Rally at Gonubie 2009

This is my perspective of the 2009 Black Rock Rally & the trip there & back.

First of all, this was billed as a very nice rally (albeit not a HOG organised one), by one of my good friends. The rally has now been held for the 3rd consecutive year at Gonubie, near East London. The organisational centre is at the Gonubie Hotel, which is right on the beach front.

However, let me not get ahead of myself. For me, the rally started in Durban at 5.15am on 30th April, a Thursday morning (a working day given off by my boss if I worked it in). My fiance' and I woke early to pack the Harley & set off in the cold dark morning of what was my Lila's first bike rally (my 7th). The excitement of the impending ride had us wide awake long before we planned. We met another 8 bikes (3 with pillions) at the Durban International Airport garage before setting of in the still cold air at 6.15, for our first stop at Port Shepstone. Another pack of seven riders from our chapter was to be leaving from the Umgababa Ultra City after 7.00 for a slightly faster ride to our destination more than 600 km's further on.

The first stage to Port Sheptstone was relatively uneventful, other than making my poor Lila extremely cold and miserable, wondering why she had wanted to ride 650 kms on the back of a Harley. The Port Shepstone petrol fill-up allowed the opportunity to add more socks, undies, gloves and scarves for some, and this changed the perspective of the trip back into a bit of an adventure again.

Harley Parts - seconds

Some of my friends have parts for their Harleys they can't use any more.

1. An unused two seater leather seat for a Dyna that was supposed to be lower to the ground than standard. Listed in the Harley catalogue as the "Reach" seat (about 1" closer to the bars). Turned out not to be low enough, but still paid for (R2700.00) and now standing waiting for a new owner if the right offer is made. Picture to follow soon.

2. A short windscreen for a Sportster that was replaced by a larger removable one after a couple of weeks. Owner only asking R1000.00 - all fittings available. SOLD!!

These are only available in the Durban area. Contact me through the "comment" link below so I can put you in touch with these Harley riders.
